06 October 2007

German Chancellor Angela Merkel met Saturday with Nelson Mandela, and afterwards urged the world to follow the former South African president's legacy of peace to resolve Africa's conflicts.

The two talked about ways to broker peace across the continent and about efforts to fight AIDS.

Ms. Merkel was scheduled to visit an HIV/AIDS project in Cape Town later in the day.

The German chancellor is on a five-day visit to Africa. She arrived in South Africa Thursday from Ethiopia. She travels to Liberia on Sunday.
