Opposition supporters raise machetes and sticks next to a poster of opposition leader Raila Odinga, during riots in the Mathare slum in Nairobi, 02 Jan 2008
Kenya's attorney general has called for an independent body to confirm the results of last week's disputed presidential election.
The statement from Attorney General Amos Wako came as opposition leaders canceled Thursday's planned protest in the capital, Nairobi. Police used warning shots, tear gas and water cannon to disperse opposition supporters as they tried to march toward Nairobi's Uhuru Park.
