2010 Minneapolis Mosaic Celebrates Fusion of Cultures

 MINNEAPOLIS – The eighth annual Minneapolis MOSAIC Festival, a celebration of the city’s diverse arts and cultures, is on Saturday, June 5 with hundreds of entertainers performing at various venues along Hennepin Avenue in downtown Minneapolis.
 
“Minneapolis MOSAIC is an annual opportunity for our communities to celebrate the city’s abundance and diversity in music, dance, theater, visual arts, film and literary arts, and to promote the broad range of local cultural and arts organizations,” said Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak.
 

Minnesota STD cases decline in 2009

Chlamydia cases remain stable, syphilis and gonorrhea cases drop. The total number of reportable sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Minnesota dropped slightly to 16,702 in 2009, a 5 percent drop from the previous year, state health officials reported today. 
According to a new report from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), there were 17,649 cases reported in 2008 and 17,057 cases in 2007. Reportable STDs in Minnesota include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and chancroid. 
"Chlamydia was Minnesota’s number one reported STD this past year with 14,186 cases," said Peter Carr, manager of the STD and HIV Section at MDH. "This is almost identical to last year’s totals where we saw 14,350 chlamydia cases reported."

NEW YORK, NY.- Elsie McCabe Thompson, President, the Museum for African Art, announced that the Museum—one of the country’s premier gateways to the arts and cultures of Africa and the African Diaspora—will reopen to the public in its major new facility in April 2011.

Fish advisory for East African Communities

Minnesota Department of Agriculture issues advisory for dried uneviscerated fish 

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is alerting consumers to avoid eating dried uneviscerated fish after MDA officials discovered and embargoed more than 400 pounds of product in recent weeks at ethnic grocery stores in the Twin Cities.  Eating dried uneviscerated fish – dried fish from which the internal organs have not been removed – can result in food-borne botulism poisoning. 
The dried uneviscerated fish in question are typically salted, and in some cases smoked.  Consumers are asked to throw away any dried uneviscerated fish they may have at home. 

Volcano cloud creates havoc for African exports

Fish, flowers, fruit and vegetables were tossed or fed to cows throughout Africa as a volcanic eruption in Iceland paralyzed flights to European markets.
 
In Kenya, some 10 million flowers — mostly roses — were thrown while asparagus, broccoli and green beans grown for export to Europe were fed to Kenyan cattle because storage facilities were filled to capacity.

Ibukunoluwa is a Nigerian Model, Actress and Miss Nigeria USA Finalist. She came to America at the age of 5, and grew up primarily on the Eastern Coast of the United States. She is the first of two children. She speaks English in addition to her native language of Yoruba. Having grown up with parents who are both in the medical field, Ibukunoluwa had different ambitions from a very young age. "Aside from having interests in fashion design at 11, when she would compile various sketches and sew them for her Barbies, she also participated in dance, cheerleading, singing, acting, piano and various sports such as softball, track and tennis." Her publicist Tay Arinola told African News Journal 

16th Anniversary of Rwandan Genocide Remembered

(GIN) – A somber national memorial marked the 16th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide when close to a million people died in civil strife that pitted a Hutu-dominated government against majority Tutsis and moderate Hutus.
 
Triggered by the assassination of President Juvenal Habyarimana on April 6, at least 800,000 people were killed, or according to some estimates, as much as 20 percent of the total population..
 

Rwandan Diplomat During Genocide Alive and Well in Alabama

A former ambassador to the U.N. during the horrific days of the Rwandan was discovered living quietly in Alabama working in a plastics factory.

Jean Damascene Bizimana, the country's 36-year-old ambassador in the spring of 1994 when close to a million people were killed in a so-called ethnic war, defended the regime while in his U.N. post and opposed an arms embargo which all other members of the Security Council endorsed.

Hayor Bibimma Dance Company Raises Money for Area Schools

From Farmington Elementary School early this year to Meadow View School this month, local African Dance Company is performing a World Class dance performances at local schools and decided to give away all the proceeds, 100%, to these schools.
The schools in turn will use these money to buy necessary material for their music classes. “This is one way Kofi is giving back to the community” told African News Journal by Matt Damon, spokesperson for the band.
