PRESIDENT OF GHANA LOSES BATTLE WITH CANCER

(GIN) – A hard-fought battle with cancer ended this week with the death of Ghana’s President John Evans Atta Mills. Six visits to specialists in the U.S. were unable to stem the spread of the disease and the executive apparently realized the finality of his condition, sending a letter to Parliament this week that designated the Vice President to fill his post.

He performed his last official function on June 3 when he toured the site of a devastating plane crash in Accra.

The Fifth Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China and Africa Cooperation was held in Beijing on Thursday and Friday. President Hu Jintao attended the opening ceremony and delivered the keynote speech, during which he detailed the achievements of Sino-African cooperation over the past 12 years, outlined the bright future of the new type of strategic partnership between China and Africa, and announced a series of policy measures that the Chinese government will implement to further promote bilateral cooperation.

UK PHARMA TO PAY ‘WHOPPING’ $3 BILLION FINE FOR MASSIVE HEALTHCARE FRAUD

The U.S. Justice Dept. has announced the largest settlement ever for healthcare fraud against UK-based GlaxoSmithKline for off-label marketing and failure to disclose the safety risks of its diabetes drug Avandia, among other violations.
The company has extensive sales in Africa but does not face prosecution there for these issues at this time.
