Carnaval Around the World in Twin Cities

EXPERIENCE '¡CARNAVAL!' AROUND THE WORLD AT NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES EXHIBIT BEGINNING APRIL 6 AT HENNEPIN COUNTY LIBRARY- MINNEAPOLIS CENTRAL

Vibrant spring festivals with parades, masqueraders in colorful costumes, music, and theatre are a cultural tradition celebrated around the world.  You can experience festivals in eight international cities via the National Endowment for the Humanities on the Road exhibit, "¡Carnaval!"  The exhibit is on display Tuesday, April 6-Tuesday, May 25 in Cargill Hall at Hennepin County Library - Minneapolis Central, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis.  Admission is free.

The exhibit's title is from the Spanish/Portuguese spelling of the word carnival.  "¡Carnaval!" showcases costumes, masks, musical instruments, photos, and video of festivals in Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Mexico, Bolivia, Brazil, the Caribbean, and New Orleans.  The festivals celebrate rebirth and renewal, build community and culture, and delight in the theatre of glitz and glam.  Creative expression is encouraged;  outlandish costumes and parades, and charades and masquerades typify these razzle-dazzle events.

A Family Gallery Guide with historical background information about the festivals and fun activities to do at home is available at the exhibit.

"¡Carnaval!" exhibit hours are the same as the library's:  10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday;  10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday;  and noon-5 p.m. on Sunday.

"¡Carnaval!" is presented in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities and is funded in part with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on Nov. 4, 2008, which dedicated funding to preserve Minnesota’s art and cultural heritage.
