Khumalo Chats with Basha Said of African News Journal While Jeremy Iggers of TC Daily Planet Checks the Schedule
ANJ News – African Publishers Anton van Zyl and Zaidi Khumalo came to Minnesota to know more about the local media & share thier experiences with them. During their stay, they traveled to different parts of the State, met some publishers and spoke to a group of students in a Journalism class at U of M Duluth.
The two men were “Featured Guests” at TC Daily Planet’s Brown Bag lunch in January where they spoke about publishing business in Africa, challenges & oportunities and how they operate differently from here.
Van Zyl is the publisher of a group of independent papers in the South Africa’s remote Limpopo province.
Khumalo is an editor of a one-man, monthly newspa-per in one of the townships of Johannesburg. In spite of their different situations and backgrounds, they are strong allies, operating in a partnership that van Zyl describes using the Nguni word, “Ubuntu,” which suggests individuals are measured by their relationships with others: “I am because you are.”
Anton publishes both both paid and free newspapers weekly with circulation of 15000 in all. Anton said most of the news in his papers focus regional and a very few in a national news .in there. Anton whose his youth publication won an International Award, is also, the Head of Asso-ciation of Independent Publishers of Southern Africa (AIPSA).
Mr. Zaidi Khumalo’s publication is a monthly one and free.
“ Our circlution is 8,500 & distributed select areas in the Subarbs of Johnsberg.” Khumalo said.
“Even though we face tough competition from Corporate Publishers, we tend to focus local and we winning” he added.
Khumalo said one of the places he gets ad revenue included goverment entitites such as the City Hall where they carry their announcements.
Publishers’ visit to Minnes-ota is sponsored by the Minnesota Newspaper Association, the Alworth Institute for International Studies and a grant from the University of Minnesota Office of the Vice President for Research.
