The Land of 10,000 Homeless: An Artistic Portrayal of Homelessness in Minnesota.

Description: The event The Land of 10,000 Homeless: An Artistic Portrayal of Homelessness in Minnesota will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14 at Plymouth Congregational Church, located at 1900 Nicollet Avenue at the corner of Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis.

The University of Minnesota Human Rights Center, Plymouth Congregational Church Outreach, the Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children at the University of Minnesota, and Voices of the Streets are sponsoring the event.

The event will include music, performance, visual art, short videos and photography. Featured artists include poets/musicians Desdamona and Julia Dinsmore, photographers Tobechi Tobechukwu and Matt Dahl, cellist Matt Knippel, and accordionist Daniel Turpening. Some of the art will be available to view and hear on the web at www.voicesofthestreets.org, which will be launched in the first week of 2007 to coincide with this event.

The event cost is on a sliding scale from $0 to $10 based on what people can afford. Most proceeds will support the work of the X-Committee, an advocacy group made up of homeless and formerly homeless individuals whose mission is to assist individuals experiencing homelessness in Minnesota.

The schedule of the event follows.

2 to 3 p.m. -- guests will be invited to see visual art and photographs displayed in the reception area and learn about homelessness from advocacy organizations at various display tables.

3 to 5 p.m. -- the event will move to an intimate performance space, where the guests will be treated to music videos, spoken word performances, theater, and musical guests, each with their own artistic expression of homelessness. Many of the performers will speak about the realities of homelessness from their own personal experience.

Free parking will be available on LaSalle Avenue, half a block north of Franklin Avenue.

Somali Diaspora Project: The Somali Diaspora, the Journey Away at 3pm at William Mitchell College of Law

Award winning photographer Abdi Roble and writer Doug Rutledge will present their work on the Somali Diaspora. They have documented the Somali community in Columbus Ohio, have followed a family's journey from Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya to Anaheim and Portland Maine document their process of adjusting to life in America. Currently they are documenting the Somali community in Minneapolis. They provide insight into the Somali communities and their journey in America. Open to the public.

The Guthrie Theater is proud to present In Darfur, a staged reading of a new play that addresses the humanitarian crisis in The Sudan. Playwright Winter Miller collaborated with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nicholas D. Kristof to write In Darfur, a provocative account of one fictitious journalist�s quest to deliver an �above the fold� story about Darfurthat will force a nation from remote awareness to moral and political outrage. Feb. 1 & 2 - International Institute Of Minnesota -  Interpreter Orientation: Introduction To Theory And Practice, $100


The International Institute of Minnesota will be hosting an interactive workshop for interpreters on February 1st and 2nd, 2007.  This 1 ½ day seminar is ideal for those who would like to interpret and want to learn more about interpreting in community, medical and social service settings, have not had formal training as an interpreter, are new to the field of interpreting, or are proficient in English and a second language.

Council to host 2007 State of the Region Feb. 5

Metropolitan Council Chair Peter Bell will reflect on the past and look to the future at the 2007 State of the Region event Feb. 5 at the Minnesota History Center, 345 W. Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul.

The event comes as the Council marks the 40th anniversary of its
creation by the Minnesota Legislature. Bell will discuss the progress of the region over the past four decades, as well as some of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

investment in light rail transit.  This will be an opportunity to view
and comment on the on-going work of the University and Capitol/Downtown Central Corridor citizen task forces as they begin to review a draft of a "Central Corridor Development Strategy"  for the City of Saint Paul.

Please join us on February 18 th, 2007 at a location soon to be determined for a “Relationships and Stress Management” workshop conducted by Dr. Sam A. Luboga and sponsored by the Uganda Association of Minnesota (UGAMN).

Dr. Luboga is Deputy Dean of Makerere University Medical School and a Chair of the Uganda Youth Forum. He is a Surgeon by profession but most importantly he has spent a number of years as a motivator and a Relationships and Stress Management counselor.

He has been invited all over Uganda, and other parts of the world including England, Canada and the US. He has delivered his much sought after workshops in schools, churches and various settings to motivate and educate people.

This workshop is an interactive, intensive (yet enjoyable) overview of focus group procedures that can be used in public and non-profit
environments. Practical approaches to determining the appropriate use of focus group studies, design options, developing questions, recruiting participants, moderating skills, and analyzing and reporting results are emphasized.

*Richard A. Krueger, PhD,* is a University of Minnesota professor
emeritus. Dr. Krueger taught qualitative research methods and program evaluation and served as the evaluation leader for the University of Minnesota Extension Service for over 20 years. Although trained as a quantitative researcher, Dr. Krueger teaches courses and workshops on focus group interviews throughout the United States and internationally.
